P151 – PROGRAMME ON PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (NON-LIFE)

Background

In the overall scheme of HRD practices in an organisation, performance appraisal constitutes an important activity affecting the employee morale and performance.  People need to know how they are performing and get an authentic feedback about the same, in a most non-threatening manner.  They need to know their strengths and weaknesses.  Performance appraisal is an important initiative in the hands of supervisors, to motivate employees for superior performance and reward the same.  Though all organistions have some appraisal system in place, effective operation of the same is not so.  Performance Counselling on the other hand is also a specialised activity which is mostly shunned by supervisors.  At the same time, if done right, Performance Appraisal and Performance Counselling can have a tremendous impact on employee performance and development of the staff and the organisation.
