Ethiopia Revisited- Comprehensive Technical Programme on non-life insurance for Nyala Insurance Share Corporation (NISCO)

Ethiopia is a land locked country in Sub Saharan Africa. The great River Nile that is the cradle of the Egyptian civilization originates from this country. The remnants of the fossil of the earliest human being ‘Lucy’ were discovered here. The economy is mainly agrarian. Coffee, hides & skins and fruits are commodities mainly traded by Ethiopia.

The capital Addis Ababa situated almost in the centre of the country amidst verdant hills and picturesque scenery approximately 4000 feet above sea level has an excellent climate that is almost similar to any hill station in our country.

Nyala Insurance Share Corporation (NISCO) is one of the eight private players transacting Non-Life Insurance business in Ethiopia with a strong presence. NIA was invited to impart training in Comprehensive Technical Programme on non-life insurance by NISCO for their executives at Addis Ababa. Accordingly from 9th August 2004 to 23rd August 2004, NIA deputed Shri N C Ray, Faculty Member and Shri Murali R K Iyer, Research Associate to conduct the training programme. The learning process was enriched by the application of digital-technology with intervening value additions such as interactions through case studies and field visits.

In the letter written to the Director, NIA, the Managing Director, NISCO Mr. Nahu Senaye Araya acknowledges, “As confirmed by the participants and the co-ordinators, the programme fully met its objectives and completed with great success.” He also complimented the visiting team: “I, therefore, would like to take this opportunity and extend my sincere appreciation and thanks to Mr. N C Ray and Mr. Murali R K Iyer, for their friendly approach, unreserved effort and commitments demonstrated during the whole training programme”.
